Beginning in 1853, Tissot Watch Company has consistently obliged its customers by continually producing innovative watches. An unrelenting pioneering spirit has led Tissot from its humble origins in the town of Le Locle, in the Jura Mountains of Switzerland to an international presence in over 150 countries. It was founded by Charles-Felicien Tissot along with his son Charles-Emile Tissot who actually established the Tissot factory. From the company’s early days they have looked far beyond their Swiss borders. In 1858 Charles-Emile ventured out of his small village and headed to Russia. He was very successful in selling their savonette pocket watches all across this vast empire, and taking that first leap to becoming a global brand. Such initiative has become the hallmark of the Tissot Watch Co.
The Tissot Watch Co. was the first company to mass-produce the pocket watch. It transformed the watch industry and made Tissot Watches a household name. In 1853 it followed that up with introducing the first pocket watch with dual time zones, and the first watch with anti-magnetic properties. Tissot Watches revolutionized the world of watch making when it presented the T-Touch, a timepiece with groundbreaking touch screen technology.
The long list of “firsts” that Tissot Watches can claim goes on and on. They have produced watches in an array of interesting materials that have never been seen in watch design before. Tissot Watch Co. has created unique timepieces made of plastic, namely the IDEA 2001, introduced in 1971, and rock, e.g. the Alpine Granite Rock watch rolled out in 1985. The Pearl Watch presented in 1987 was the first watch created out of mother of pearl, and then in 1988 Tissot Watch Company topped that off with the Wood Watch made entirely of wood.
In 1930 Tissot collaborated with the illustrious Omega watch making family, and the resulting Tissot-Omega watches have become highly coveted by watch aficionados and collectors all over the world.
Tissot is also very well represented in the world of sports timekeeping. They are the official timekeeper for fencing, ice hockey, cycling and motorcycling world championships, and was also used in 1957 for the Davis Cup and in 1938 for Downhill Skiing in Switzerland.
Tissot watches have been worn by some of the most famous cultural icons of their day such as Nelson Mandela, Elvis Presley, and Grace Kelly just to name a few. Most recently, Angelina Jolie sported T-Touch watches in the films Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and Lara Croft Tomb Raider.
